lyrics

TOM MIX

Tom and my Dad worked clearing bush

Tom the roughest fella I’d ever crossed paths

He smelled a mixture of cow manure and chewin’ tobacco

That he frequently spat on the ground

Tom and my Dad worked silently all day
Except for the buzzing “Pioneer” chainsaw
Tom lifted trees without jigs
Over his shoulder
Just like they were little twigs

The three of us would stop for our lunch
Sitting on rain soaked fallen logs
Drinking coffee, from aluminum thermos
That’s where I got a first taste of chewin’

Chorus:
Old Tom Mix was a mighty fine fella

Swung an axe like cutting through butter

Lived alone in a shack near Devil’s Glen a time

He was good to friend of mine

One day cutting, guess God wasn’t looking
Big tree fell knocking Tom flat as hay
He got up but was never quite the same
He never worked with my Dad much again

I miss Old Tom Mix, he was a real friend
Taught me to stay out of the way
Taught me to run for your life when you hear the word “Timber”
I still hear him say

Chorus:
Old Tom Mix was a mighty fine fella
Swung an axe like he was cutting through butter
Lived alone in a shack near Devil’s Glen a time
He was a good friend of mine
He was a good friend of mine
He still is a good friend of mine.

Well I ain’t just looking back
I’m trying find a way forward
And tell you what got me here
If it wasn’t for Old Tom Mix
And that mighty Mad River
I wouldn’t have much to say
